SAMARIAFrom Mount GerizimA place. A people. A living story.

A voice from within

The story behind
the journal.

A learning space rooted in Abood Cohen’s account of life in the Samaritan community.

From a book to an open conversation

Abood’s manuscript brings together personal memories, explanations of religious practice, and the story of a community. It begins with questions people ask a Samaritan guide and returns to the lived details: a difficult letter, a teacher’s patience, a melody before dawn, a gathering around the family table.

“Who am I? What are the Samaritans (or what is a Samaritan)? Where did we come from?”

These opening questions, from page 3, shape this journal. The aim is to give visitors and students a clear place to begin, while preserving the personal voice behind the material.

Sources & editorial approach

The source is the 65-page 2026 PDF manuscript supplied by Abood. The articles draw primarily on its developed passages about identity, childhood education, the museum, festivals, and the Sabbath. Page references refer to the PDF’s page order.

Articles are adaptations, rather than a transcription of complete chapters. Their titles, headings, introductions, summaries, and reflection prompts were prepared for this website. Direct quotations are identified as quotations. Photographs come from pages 5 and 65 of the supplied manuscript.

The manuscript includes unfinished sections, working notes, and material awaiting references. Those sections have been left out. Community traditions are attributed to the community or the book, and personal experiences are presented as personal accounts. These articles have not undergone an independent academic peer review.

A place to start studying

For a class paper, use the page references to locate the underlying passage and distinguish a personal account, a religious interpretation, and a historical claim. The learning paths offer an introduction; the questions at the end of each article can guide discussion or a notebook response.
